Fumed silica is a pure, relatively reactive source of silica. It is particularly attractive for alkali-free synthesis because its sodium content is very low. However, the powder is extremely light and fluffy, and as such, is increasingly difficult to handle as the scale of a particular zeolite synthesis reaction increases. Fumed silica is also somewhat more expensive than other silica sources, such as precipitated silica.
Since its first production in the early forties of this century, fumed silica has found widespread use in industrial applications.
Due to its pyrogenic manufacturing process by combustion of silicon tetrachloride in an oxygen-hydrogen flame, fumed silica offers a variety of fascinating properties. It consists of finely dispersed amorphous silicon dioxide and its surface is covered by highly reactive silanol groups which are available for chemical reactions.
Additionally, fumed silica shows a space-filling particle structure related to a high surface area and lacking micropores. These characteristics enable fumed silica to act as a free flow additive in powder-like solids, as a thickener in various liquids and as a powerful reinforcing filler in elastomers.
How is fumed silica manufactured?
Fumed silica is a type of synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide, produced by burning SiCl4 in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. It is made by flame pyrolysis of silicon tetrachloride or from quartz and vaporized in a 3000°C electric arc. The particles feature a surface area of 50–600 m2/g, a primary particle size of 5–50 nm, and a density of 160–190 kg/m3. The compound consists of amorphous silica fused into three-dimensional secondary particles. The chains and branches finally cluster into tertiary particles, providing the end product with low bulk density and high surface area.
